Exploring the world since 1965

What difference a mountain range makes. Up to now we were at the wet end of the Passat winds driving up the humid Caribbean air to an altitude where the air cannot hold the humidity anymore and rains off. Every day and every night and also today in the morning.

Then on our way to the Gulf of Nicoya we crossed the watershed and immediately the sky turned blue, the air got dry (and hotter), and the vegetation turned from wet rainforest to dry rainforest. And when we left the car before you always felt like being in a steam bath, whereas now you experience dry oven heat.

The lodge is beautifully located overlooking the gulf and a lot of birding opportunities from the porch.

Scaly-breasted Hummingbird

This beautiful little owl slept through the day in a palm directly behind our little hut, but risked a glance to see what the commotion was about.

There is a pier into the gulf which is dominated by Royal Terns and Brown Pelicans.

In the afternoon we visited some salt flats that belong to the hacienda and proved to be the perfect attraction for coast birds.
